AUTISM: The Musical

Friday 18 September 2009
Kindly sponsored by the US Embassy Singapore

ARC (S) was pleased to host our first movie event on Friday 18 September 2009. The event was kindly sponsored by the U.S. Embassy Singapore.

AUTISM: The Musical, a documentary by director Tricia Regan follows five American children with autism and their families over the course of six months. The documentary captures their distinct personal struggles, pressures and triumphs as the children write, rehearse and perform their own full-length musical.

As an added treat to our guests, pre-movie snack stations were set-up at Pathlight Café. Under their respective job coaches, Pathlight Students displayed their skills in preparing food & drinks and selling the goodies too. Guests were spoilt for choice when purchasing snacks ranging from fresh fruits, burgers, hotdogs, deli fare, drinks and a movie must-have... pop-corn!

More than 400 guests attended the screening including guests from the U.S. Embassy Singapore.

The documentary was well received and garnered positive feedback after the show. “The struggle of parents with children on the spectrum is so real to me. I almost see myself as one of them” a parent shared. A teacher was inspired by the volunteers featured in the documentary; how they overcame several challenges and persevered in staging the Musical. Another parent quipped, “We should stage a musical in Singapore too!”

We would like to extend our heart-felt gratitude to the U.S. Embassy Singapore for making this event possible through the loan of the DVD of the documentary and for the kind sponsorship extended to us.
