450 MORE PLACES AT SPECIAL EDUCATION SCHOOLS

The Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat and Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ms Sim Ann were at Pathlight School for a visit and dialogue session with our school leaders and educators. In an interview after a tour of our premises, the Education Minister announced that MOE will be looking to boost capacity and quality of education in the special needs sector. He further added that Pathlight will be gradually boosting its capacity to 900 by end 2013.

NATIONAL DAY RALLY

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke about the Special Needs community in his 2011 National Day Rally speech. He praised Pathlight School for its good work and mentioned the National Day Observance Ceremony for Ang Mo Kio GRC that was held at Pathlight. Following the Rally speech, families with special needs children greatly welcomed the Prime Minister's plans for the SPED community. They expressed their concerns over how the higher cost of special education impacted on their other children, the lack of available vacancies at special schools and how their children could not cope in mainstream schools.

HUMAN LIBRARY, LIAN HE ZAO BAO

Singapore will be adopting the Danish concept of a human library where volunteers (each specialising in a different field) will, if selected by a reader, engage in discussion and answer questions on their field. Mrs Ng Sock Kian from Autism Resource Centre (Singapore) formed part of the pool of volunteers that made up the catalogue of "human books".

IT'S PLAY TIME FOR ARC & PATHLIGHT STAFF AT UNIVERSAL STUDIOS SINGAPORE!

ARC and Pathlight School recognize that it is not just about work all the time. As part of its team building exercise, ARC/Pathlight brought more than 200 of its staff to Universal Studios Singapore on 24 June 2011 for a day of fun! Everyone had an absolute blast that day!

PATHLIGHT EXTENDS IT COURSES FOR AUTISTIC KIDS

Children with autism, usually weak in human interaction, are strong in visual learning - and Pathlight School is homing in on this to build up its IT programme for them.


Now all its 600 pupils and students from kindergarten to Secondary 5 go through a slew of IT and design courses.

DISTRICT ARTS FEST TREATS FOR PATHLIGHT STUDENTS

A piece of the Central Singapore District Arts Festival (DAF) came to Pathlight for the first time and thrilled the students. The students were beside themselves with delight, jumping up to cheer the performers as well as their peers and teachers who had volunteered to perform.

'ART FOR AUTISM' EXHIBITION

To commemorate 2011 World Autism Awareness Day, Pathlight School staged their first panel of eight artists in the 'Art for Autism' Exhibition on from 1 to 3 April 2011, aiming to raise the level of awareness of the special talents of people with autism.

REMOVING HURDLES FOR AUTISTIC WORKERS

Autistic adults find it tough in the job market, even if they have the papers to prove they can do the work. By the end of 2011, some of them will get a boost through a Job Assessment and Support Centre that prepares adults with autism for the workplace.

Ms Denise Phua, supervisor of the school board, hopes that the school coming on board will see the upside of the collaboration.
