Pathlight School
Parents/Caregivers, Teachers/Educators, Therapists and Professionals caring for/working with individuals (pre-school or in primary, secondary or special school) with an Autism Spectrum Disorder
While not a pre-requisite, it would be useful for participants to have attended the Fundamentals of Autism workshop
THIS TRAINING WORKSHOP HAS BEEN PRE-APPROVED BY
NATIONAL COUNCIL OF SOCIAL SERVICES (NCSS) FOR CAREGIVER TRAINING GRANT

Programme Description:Language is best learnt by using it. Often children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or autism do not have the same opportunities as their typical peers to use language. They require experiential activities to be created for their learning.

This training workshop aims to empower participants with the knowledge and skills to craft strategies to help the child with autism to expand his/her vocabulary within the home environment and apply it to the academic and social environments.

Participants will be taught to create a fun yet structured environment for children with autism to practise the use of language through a “show and tell” format called “Newstime”.

Participants will be exposed to tools and strategies that can be applied to effectively support their child with autism in developing meaningful vocabulary through “Newstime” activity.

Learning Goals:Upon completion of the training workshop, participants will be able to:
  • understand the impact of autism on the development of vocabulary skills in children with autism
  • structure an appropriate environment to create experiential learning through ‘Newstime’ activity
  • set learning objectives
  • create a plan complete with visual supports and other strategic tools for a successful “Newstime” session
