| Programme Description | : | The Higher Certificate in Autism (HCIA) is a higher intermediate applied course designed for practitioners (teachers, educators, therapists and professionals) who work directly with individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It has been developed by a team of highly experienced and dedicated professionals from various disciplines in Singapore, Australia and the United States of America.
The Higher Certificate in Autism aims to equip participants with a high degree of skill and independence in screening, analysis and the development of appropriate intervention strategies in the areas of behaviour and behaviour management as well as language and communication in individuals with autism.
The key differentiators of this higher intermediate applied course are that it is skills-based and is developed and taught by practitioners who work hands-on with individuals with autism and who understand the challenges of learning and application of skills within the Singapore context.
This programme comprises of 2 modules as described below:
- Communication in Autism
This module provides participants with applied knowledge and skills in analysing and supporting language and communication difficulties in individuals with ASD. Topics include the following:
- Overview of normal language and communication development
- Impact of communication differences in ASD
- Introduction to Functional Communication
- Framework for supporting the development of verbal and non-verbal communication skills
- Crafting and teaching communication supports
- Positive Behaviour Support 1
This module provides participants with tools and strategies to develop and implement action plans for individuals with ASD who present with behavioural challenges. Topics include:
- Overview of why behaviour problems occur
- Collecting behavioural data
- Defining problem behaviour and identifying an appropriate alternative behaviour
- Crafting action plans to help prevent and manage challenging behaviours
- Applying positive strategies to teach appropriate replacement behaviours

| Learning Goals | : | The Higher Certificate in Autism is designed for participants to work successfully with individuals with autism in the following ways:
- Gain the necessary knowledge and skills to perform individualised assessment
- Acquire knowledge and skills to select appropriate goals and craft meaningful intervention programmes
- Create and develop a selection of appropriate tools to teach positive behaviour and to improve and enhance communication skills

With VCF subsidy:

- S$1,996 per participant (Local – S’porean or S’pore PR)
- S$2,196 per participant (Foreigner – Employment Pass Holder)

| Award | : | The Autism Resource Centre (Singapore), in partnership with Social Service Training Institute, will award a certificate to participants who have successfully completed the training programme and passed all assessments. |
| Special Note |
: | For admission into this programme, applicants must meet all the following requirements:
- have successfully completed and been awarded the Certificate In Autism by Autism Resource Centre (Singapore);
- have attained the minimum qualification of Certificate in Special Education, its equivalent, or GCE “O” level;
- have at least three (3) months’ relevant experience in working directly with individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD);
- currently working with or providing services to an individual with ASD (cannot be your own or your relative’s child)
- will continue to work with the same individual throughout the course duration
