Parents/Caregivers, Teachers/Educators, Therapists and Professionals working with/caring for Primary School children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder |
|
While not a pre-requisite, it would be useful for participants to have attended the Fundamentals of Autism workshop |
THIS TRAINING WORKSHOP HAS BEEN PRE-APPROVED BY NATIONAL COUNCIL OF SOCIAL SERVICES (NCSS) FOR CAREGIVER TRAINING GRANT
|
| Programme Description | : | Play forms an important part of a child’s learning and social development.
Most children, including children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), love to play with other children. The difference is that for children with ASD, play does not come naturally to them; they have to be taught play skills.
Sometimes, children with autism seem not to want to play with other children. This is because they do not know how to play with other children, not because they do not want to. They have to be taught how to play with other children.
This focus of this workshop is to increase participant knowledge and skills in developing basic social play skills for their child with autism.
|
| Learning Goals | : | Upon completion of the training workshop, participants will be able to:
-
Guide the appropriate level of play skills for their child with autism through the intervention framework which includes:
- Selecting activities that are highly motivating to their child
- Modifying games to focus on social rules
- Using visual structure to make play activities visually clear and meaningful
- Setting-up play routines at home/in the classroom
