Pathlight School
Parents/Caregivers, Teachers/Educators, Therapists and Professionals working with/caring for young children (pre-school or in special education schools) with an Autism Spectrum Disorder
While not a pre-requisite, it would be useful for participants to have attended the Fundamentals of Autism workshop
THIS TRAINING WORKSHOP HAS BEEN PRE-APPROVED BY
NATIONAL COUNCIL OF SOCIAL SERVICES (NCSS) FOR CAREGIVER TRAINING GRANT

Programme Description:Learners with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or autism often use language for protesting and requesting, but may have difficulty developing and using language above this level. If we want our children to make more complex sentences to comment, understand/give directions and ask/answer questions, we need to teach expanded vocabulary.

Participants in this workshop will be empowered with the knowledge and skills to craft strategies to help the child with autism to develop and expand his/her vocabulary within the home environment and to apply it to the academic and social environments.

Participants will be taught to create a fun yet structured environment for children with autism to experience and practice the use of language through:
  • establishing joint attention routines at home
  • focusing on activities that expand the 4 most commonly used parts of speech - nouns/ verbs/ prepositions/ adjectives
Participants will be exposed to tools and strategies that can be applied to effectively support their child with autism in developing meaningful vocabulary through experiential activities.

Learning Goals:Upon completion of the training workshop, participants will be able to:
  • understand the impact of autism on the development of vocabulary skills in children with autism
  • structure an appropriate environment to create experiential learning by using their child’s learning strengths, preferences and interests
  • set learning objectives
  • create a plan complete with visual supports and other strategic tools for a successful vocabulary learning session
